Marketing channel attribution for service businesses

The short answer

Channel attribution connects each new client back to the channel that brought them in, such as search, ads, social, referrals or reviews. It measures channels by booked appointments and revenue, not by clicks or impressions.

At a glance
  • Source tracking across all inquiry points
  • Call tracking setup where appropriate
  • Campaign tagging standards
  • Source carried from inquiry to revenue

Why attribution matters

Every marketing channel reports its own success. The ad platform shows clicks, the social platform shows reach, the SEO report shows rankings. None of them shows which channel produced customers who paid you, and how much.

Attribution answers that question. It is what lets you move budget from channels that look busy to channels that bring revenue.

It also protects you from vendors grading their own work. When every channel is measured the same way, against booked revenue in your own records, comparisons are fair and decisions are easier to defend.

How we set it up

Attribution starts at the moment someone first contacts you.

  • Source tracking on every form, booking and chat
  • Tracking phone numbers by channel where appropriate
  • Campaign tags on ads, emails and social links
  • A how-did-you-hear question as a backup
  • Source saved on the customer record and carried to the sale
  • Revenue by channel, campaign and service
  • Cost per inquiry, per customer and return on spend

Being honest about the limits

No attribution is perfect. A customer may see an ad, search your name later, read reviews and call. Different models give credit to different steps. Referrals and word of mouth are hard to track precisely. Privacy changes in browsers and phones limit some tracking.

We choose a clear, consistent method, explain what it does and does not capture and focus on trends and large differences between channels, which are reliable even when individual records are not.

Using attribution to decide spend

Once revenue is tied to channels, budget decisions become simpler. Channels with a strong return get more. Channels with weak results get changed or cut. New channels get a fair test with clear measures.

Attribution also helps outside paid marketing. It shows the value of reviews, referrals and repeat customers, which often deserve more attention than they get.

We revisit attribution after any major change, such as a new channel, a new website or a change in how leads are captured, so the method stays reliable as the business evolves.

Signs it is time to fix this

You cannot say which marketing channel brought in last month's best customers.
Ad reports show results that do not match what you see in revenue.
Leads arrive without any record of where they came from.
Budget decisions are based on which vendor's report looks best.

Questions

Channel attribution: common questions.

All questions

Call tracking uses different phone numbers for different channels, so calls can be attributed to their source. We set it up so your main business number stays consistent in listings, which matters for local search.

We usually start with first-touch and last-touch views side by side, because they are easy to understand. More detailed models are useful when you have enough volume to support them.

Partly. Referral links, codes and the how-did-you-hear question capture many of them. Some will always be untracked, so we look at patterns rather than perfect counts.
